Understanding the Time Investment: How Long Does Handmade Really Take?

You have a special event coming up and you'd like to make it extra special with a one-of-a-kind handmade garment. but how much time do you need to plan?

The short answer: as much time as possible!

the long answer: it depends on a lot of things:

  • Is it one garment? Or are we making different things for the whole family (holiday jammies, Easter outfits, family photo outfits...)

  • Do I have the fabric on my shelf or are we ordering something? If we're ordering a custom print, that can take 2-3 weeks to arrive once we place the order with the printer

  • Will we need to schedule a fitting mid-make? This would likely apply to something like a women's dress for a special occasion. Schedules are tricky, you're busy, I'm busy, and it could take us a week or two to find a time when our schedules mesh.

  • How complex are the garments we're making? lots of modifications, pockets, zippers, buttons...

Here are some scenarios:

  • A single kid's garment (dress, hoodie...) from fabrics I already have in hand: 1-2 weeks

  • A single item made with custom printed fabric we have to order from the printer: 4-5 weeks

  • Christmas Jammies for a family of 4: if it's after Halloween, it's too late. These projects can pile up, we should talk by the first week of October

  • Outfits for Family photos for a family of 4: 6-8 weeks

  • Easter dresses (this is a busy time of year): if we're ordering custom fabric we should place that order by Mardi Gras

  • Halloween Costumes: let's talk in August

Ready to order something just for you? book a virtual or in-person appointment, the $25 booking fee gets applied towards the final cost of your garment(s).
